Disco Saturday: Blogger's favorite 13.

This weeks "Disco Saturday" falls on the blogger's birthday. So the selections are the top 13 all time blogger's favorite Disco selections. For no reason other than these being THIS blogger's favorite songs in the genre. This by no means is a scientific listing, just the 13 picked at random based on memory, groove enjoyment and the likelihood that this blogger will play these songs constantly at one sitting.

Yeah I love these and this is my Disco playlist on the anniversary of my birth, August 13th. I don't celebrate birthdays but I will enjoy the music. Hope you'll enjoy too.

Disco Saturday: Disco Lucy and the Babalu

DISCO SATURDAY honors Lucille Ball on her 100Th birthday. (August 1, 1911-April 26, 1989)

We begin with a nod to the legendary "I Love Lucy" series with this classic disco adaption of the show's theme.

"Disco Lucy" by The Wilton Place Street Band (1976)

"I love Lucy" came to television when the big band era in music was very strong. And there were many disco songs that were remakes from the time when zoot suits and top hats were in fashion.

"Baby Face" by Wing and A Prayer Fife and Drum Corps (1975)

On "I Love Lucy" we had Ricky Ricardo, Lucy's husband who was an entertainer and bandleader originally from Cuba.

"Cuban Pete" by Desi Arnaz as "Ricky Ricardo" & Lucille Ball as "Lucy Ricardo"

So this is a mix between classic musical clips from "I Love Lucy" and the "Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" along with a few disco classics.

"Cuba" by The Gibson Brothers

"Baby Babalu"

Ricky Ricardo performed in and later owned a nightclub. It could have easily been like the famous Copacabana.

"Copacabana" by Barry Manilow (1978)

The "I Love Lucy" franchise ran from 1951 to 1960 including the original series 6 year run and the Comedy hour specials that ran for three years. But as we know, "I Love Lucy" has been in syndication for over 50 years in multiple languages around the world. Somewhere as you are reading this, there is someone watching an episode on television with the same feeling as if it were a brand new series.

Lucille Ball of course had a legendary career that continued for decades with her other "Lucy" shows and a production company that brought us classics like "Star Trek", "Mission Impossible" and "Mannix".

DISCO SATURDAY remembers the late Lucille Ball.

We continue with a disco band who's existence was a nod to the time just before "I Love Lucy" premiered. This blogger's favorite DR. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band.

"Cherchez La Femme"

"I'll Play The Fool"

And I must get something from Philadelphia in here. It's been a while :) And Philly is where the Salsoul Orchestra was based.

Disco Saturday: The hot 80's in July

It's been a hot July. Well it's always a HOT July. Temperatures in the 100's for much of the country but even temps in the 80's and 90's for some in the inner city can be hard to bear. So hoping you are staying cool out there. As you sit with a cool drink and a fan blowing a breeze on you this week's "Disco Saturday" will be in the 80's and 90's. Starting with a one hit wonder who's lead singer had slightly greater success on her own.

"Keep In Touch (Body to Body)" by Shades of Love (1982)

The lead singer of Shades of Love was Me'lisa Morgan

"Fools Paradise" by Me'lisa Morgan (1986)

Me'lisa's first solo hit was a remake of Prince's "Do Me Baby" but in the early 90's she had an upbeat cover of Al Green's "I'm Still In Love with You"

When I heard the Shades of Love song today I was driving through the tiny town of Sharon Georgia. So for that I offer a few Sharons for you to dance to.

"I Specialize In Love" by SHARON Brown

"Can You Handle It" by the late SHARON Redd (1982)

A now couple songs from the late great Gwen Guthrie that remind me of my time living in New York City in the early and mid 1980's. And I remember those HOT summers in the city. Air Conditioning was GOLDEN especially when you were too poor to have it in your own room at home and the best you could do was put a fan in the window and sit by that window at night switching back and forth between WBLS & 98.7 Kiss on the radio. There was musical pleasure with the pain of heat in the summer.

"It Should Have Been You" by Gwen Guthrie

"Seventh Heaven" by Gwen Guthrie

"Peanut Butter" by Gwen Guthrie

And a few more selections you might have grooved to back in the 80's.

"Party Lites" by Slave (1981)

"Over Like A Fat Rat" by Fonda Rae (1981)

"One More Shot" by C-Bank

And we close out this 80's edition of "Disco Saturday" with Joyce Sims

"All and All"

Stay cool this hot summer of 2011. Next week "Disco Saturday" may recognize a milestone birthday in a disco way. Come back to the blog to find out what that means.

My NON Sugarcoated opinion of the death of Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse found dead at age 27. Many are posting that it is SAD but is it really sad? I hate to rain on the grieving parade but this isn't sad as much as it is shameful REALITY. It is a painful truth and the only real sadness would be IF this isn't the wake up call that it needs to be just as it wasn't for the other drug abusers in entertainment who are now DEAD. It was predictable and should not be sugarcoated. Do drugs, refuse treatment, you are likely to DIE.

Fans knew about Amy Winehouse's troubles and continued to reward her by supporting her music. The people in Amy Winehouse's life from family to business associates to so-called friends certainly knew. Some likely tried to help all they could but many likely were just along for the ride ($$$). There are many people who could have worked harder to prevent senseless deaths like this from happening.

Perhaps the next time a celebrity or your own friends and family are abusing drugs they are given a choice...shape up, clean up or DONT SUPPORT THEM. Stop buying their music and concert tickets until they clean themselves up. Stop rewarding drug addicts. You supported her talent then you aided and abeted her demise. We tend to watch train wrecks like Amy, Lindsey and Whitney like its a sitcom and people laugh and joke about it and can't wait for their next public release. The money these entertainers earn from your support also supported everything that led to DEATH. And today's example was Amy Winehouse.

The money hungry music company executives should create and enforce higher standards to help prevent things like this from happening and of course save lives. Most people have to submit to a drug test for employment. Perhaps this should also be a condition before a recording contract is offered or a concert promotion. Other people's lives and fortunes were on the line. If one were to invest time and money to promote a talent then that talent should be prepared and protected. And a drug abuser is more of a liability than an asset. Their troubles overshadow their talent and everyone loses in the end. All that's left now are for the vultures to pick at the remains. Yes, that is a waste.

Amy Winehouse is the latest in a long line of talented 27 year olds who abused drugs and died over generations. Time to make an example and turn them into a lesson so this trend can come to an end.

She should have said YES YES YES to "Rehab"

Disco Saturday: Love in the Summertime

This week's "Disco Saturday" will feature songs with the word LOVE in the title. Love in the summer of 2011. If you have it, enjoy it.

And congratulations in advance to the pending newlyweds in New York State.

Pride and Soul Salute: Larry Levan

On July 20, 1954 a man named Lawrence Philpot was born. He only lived 38 years but in that time left a lasting legacy in music. Dance, Disco and house music. "Larry Levan" was an innovative DJ during the 1970's and 1980's. The music he played in clubs, produced or remixed became the cream of the crop, totally smashing any idea that Disco sucked. Larry Levan proved its greatness.

Larry Levan July 20, 1954 – November 8, 1992

In honor of Larry Levan's birthday the Pride and Soul blog presents on one page an hour of music as presented by Larry Levan. Mostly from his legendary tenure at the famed PARADISE GARAGE disco in New York City.

Disco Saturday: The Disco Nightlife in C Minor

Greetings everyone!

This weeks "Disco Saturday" honors the nightlife which basically Disco was the soundtrack of the nightlife in the 1970s. Or its my excuse to honor singer Alicia Bridges, who's birthday is July 15, 1953. And her disco classic is of course the song "I Love the Nightlife"

And you know this song was a prime part of anyone's "Disco Night"

GQ

The Isley Brothers had their own Disco Night too.

Disco parties went on from "Saturday Night" into Sunday Morning"

THELMA HOUSTON

And there was of course some "Night Fever" but there is no embeddable video from YouTube that I can post of the Bee Gees song. So I guess I won't post it here.

The Trammps held back the night

There were those times when Disco took you into the "Twilight Zone"

MANHATTAN TRANSFER

Or To a Galaxy far away

WAR

And in the galaxy you could see stars in someones eyes as the Disco music slows down the pace.

HERBIE HANCOCK

Many found love in the disco nightlife.

"Love in C Minor" by Cerrone

There was a lot of free love in the Disco nightlife

DOUBLE EXPOSURE

JEAN CARN

And when some woke up in the morning and it was time to go home, they asked the question "Was That All it Was"?

And they did it all again the next weekend. As I will have another installment of "Disco Saturday" next weekend.

Have a great week!

The New York Blackout 1977

Where were you when the lights went out in New York City on July 13, 1977?

They called it a BLACKOUT

I was a child growing up in South Florida with relatives living in New York. I remember watching favorite TV shows like "Welcome Back Kotter" and "Baretta" when suddenly there was a "special report" from the network news telling viewers nationwide that the electricity had gone out in the New York area.

During the overnight hours of July 13Th, 1977 and into the next day as people were stuck in elevators and on subways, looting ensued in many areas and there were hundreds of fires. It was chaos for some and in my own family there was a birth. One of my relatives gave birth to a baby girl on what was supposed to be a night of celebration of her mother's birthday. Now grandmother and granddaughter share the same birthday. Today that entire segment of the family lives in Virginia and in the 1990's another child was born on this day.

It's easy for me to remember the day for its infamy and the birthdays in my family. And there is a favorite disco song about that day by one of the legendary Disco groups, The Trammps.

"The Night The Lights Went Out" was released within a couple months of the 1977 Blackout and proved to be a regional hit especially in the disco clubs. But also to the real fans of The Trammps over the years who listen beyond their big hit "Disco Inferno".

The Trammps "Disco Inferno" would become a huge hit into the next year from the massive success of "Saturday Night Fever" which hit movie screens later in 1977.

Local news report as the lights returned to New York City.

Disco Saturday: The S.O.L.A.R. Galaxy

On July 8Th, 2011 we had the final launch of United States Space Shuttle Atlantis into space. When this mission is completed the 30 year old US Space Shuttle program will close. The space shuttles took the US into galaxies far and away over 30 years. We lost crew members with "Challenger" and "Columbia" but not in vain. And hopefully the United States will once again be pioneers and leaders in space exploration.

"Galaxy" by War (1977)

"Star Wars" by Meko (1977)

"Disco theme to Close Encounters of The Third Kind" by John Williams

So with the final launch of the space shuttle, this weeks "Disco Saturday" takes us to the galaxy of SOLAR records.

S.O.L.A.R. Records (acronym for Sound of Los Angeles Records) was reconstituted out of Soul Train Records only two years after it was founded with Soul Train television show host and creator Don Cornelius. Dick Griffey reorganized the company into the SOLAR label in late 1977 and it quickly became one of the most important disco, R&B, and dance music imprints of the late 1970s and 1980s.

Here are some selections from performers who were signed to SOLAR records and its subsidiaries.

"Soul Train 75" by The Soul Train Gang, produced by Dick Griffey and Don Cornelius as the theme to Soul Train from 1975 to 1976 ushering in the Disco era which was supported on Soul Train

"Career Girl" by Carrie Lucas (1980)

"Make it With You" By The Whispers (1977)

"I Can Make It Better For You" by The Whispers (1980)

"Make That Move" by Shalamar 1980

"I Owe You One" by Shalamar 1979

"Fantastic Voyage" by Lakeside

Black Bigots

After a recent personal confrontation I have decided to begin a regular blog series highlighting something that is way too often swept under the rug. I will call that series "Black Bigots" and it will feature people who are Black/African-American and who display the many aspects of being a bigot. Racism, homophobia, sexism and any other form of discrimination practices by persons of color toward other races and in many cases "Black On Black" discrimination. If it smells of bigotry I plan to air it out.

"Black Bigots" is being presented by me as a Black man who happens to also be gay. And I have experienced some bigotry within the same Black community where black men like to refer to other black men as "Brothers", or more commonly misspelled as "Brotha". But if you are revealed to be gay in the community those "brothers" will turn on you in a hot minute. Such is the case of a recent confrontation I had which I will dedicate its own blog post.

I have always wanted to blog with total honesty and integrity and I don't care about stepping on anyones toes as long as I am sure that the truth is being exposed. I am not also a very good writer, this is my practice and I will improve over time. But I will not hold back on the exposure of BLACK BIGOTS! Black people often talk about racism and bigotry from other ethnicitys but seem to think that it is OK for them to express the same type of hatred without being accountable. Like whenever someone uses the "N" word. If the person who says it happens to be white, they may have hell to pay. But if you are Black, its supposed to be ok. I won't give them a pass.

I am also inspired by famous Black people when they sometimes speak out on issues that they may feel make the Black community look bad. Bill Cosby has expressed his opinions many times and he caught a lot of flack for it. Some say we as black people shouldn't air out our dirty laundry. I say bullshit! It's long overdue for the truth to be exposed and dealt with. It is time to air out ALL of the dirty laundry including those HOLY DRAWZ with skid marks down the back. And if BLACK BIGOTS don't want their dirty laundry aired out in public then they need to use extra detergent to clean the laundry, or to put in simple terms....wash your ass and keep it clean.

But for those who are funky, you will be put out in the open for the light of day to expose your darkest "secrets". I will name names with no shame. And I dare you to prove me wrong. But I will also encourage you to help make things right.

Move Me No Mountain

A classic song that was never a huge hit but was recorded by legends.

Check out different versions of "Move Me No Mountain" written by Jerry Ragovoy

He produced one of the early recordings of the song by Dionne Warwick. She and Barry White's female backup group Love Unlimited each recorded and released the song in 1974-1975.

"So In Love" with Jill Scott's new song

The rare NEW song that I am enjoying

"So In Love With You" by Jill Scott featuring Anthony Hamilton and comes from Jill Scott's latest CD album release "The Light of The Sun"

Writen by Scott & Hamilton along with Terry Lewis and JR Hutson, the son of soul singer Leroy Hutson. Hutson and Scott are the primary producers of the album as well.

I first heard this song on the "Heart and Soul" channel on SiriusXM satellite radio. I have become so disgusted with new music and broadcast radio where I live that I likely would have missed this song. I realize that I discovered it late after this single was released. But better late than never. And just in time for the entire CD was released on June 21. And Jill Scott is one of the VERY few recording artists who is worthy of purchasing an actual hard copy compact disc so it can be held in your hand, its liner notes read and later placed in a respectful location on the shelf.

I'm not crazy about labels like "neo soul" but honestly, it is because of "neo soul" that soul music still exists. And I dare to say that Jill Scott is the Queen of "neo soul" who in my opinion hasn't missed a single beat with any of her CD releases. This latest song is a crown jewel.

Disco Saturday: Liberty and the freedom to dance

This week's Disco Saturday celebrates Liberty and the Freedom to dance your ass off.

Happy 4th of July weekend to everyone in the United States.

Happy Birthday in heaven to the great Phyllis Hyman (7/6/1949-6/30/1995)

"Heavenly"

Also happy birthday in heaven to Gene McFadden (July 2, 1948 – January 27, 2006), half of the team McFadden & Whitehead as legendary songwriters with Victor Carstarphen at Philadelphia International. One of their disco gems here is "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha' Baby" by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes

"Sing A Happy Song" by The O'Jays

"Over and Over" Sylvester

"There But For The Grace of God" by Machine

"Any Love" Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan

"Shine On Silver Moon" by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr
Billy Davis celebrated a birthday recently and it was also his wedding anniversary to Marilyn McCoo. Both the same day, June 26th.
This was their entry in the Disco genre.

"Don't You Want My Love" by Debbie Jacobs

"This Time Baby" by Jackie Moore

And in closing, Disco Saturday would be remiss to not offer a congratulations to the Disco fans of New York State who happen to be Gay or Lesbian as the state of New York legalized their right to marry. There have been celebrations for the past week from Gay Pride and many weddings are being planned as New Yorkers enter the Fourth of July holiday weekend and the official start of marriage equality in the coming weeks.

New York makes 6 for Marriage Equality!

Congratulations to the state of New York, the 6th state in the United States to legalize same sex marriage. The Republican led State Senate passed the marriage bill by a vote of 33-29. Already passed by the state assembly, MARRIAGE EQUALITY will officially take effect 30 days after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signs the bill into law.

New York also makes history as it is one of the rare cases where marriage equality was achieved by legislative action and not by judicial action. Also there are no residency restrictions for getting married in New York state so while your marriage may not be recognized in Georgia where this blog is based, I forsee many Gay couples vacationing in New York where they can have a fabulous ballroom style wedding.

Again, congratulations to the state of New York for doing the right and fair thing.

And now some music.

"Chapel Of Love" by The Dixie Cups

"Lets Get Married" by Al Green

"Won't Cha' Stay With Me" by L.T.D. (Jeffrey Osborne on vocals)
This is a great wedding song. Listen and enjoy.

"New York State Of Mind" by Billy Joel

"Native New Yorker" by Odyssey

And the song so many have posted almost immediately after the vote

"New York New York"

Now go ahead, book those ballrooms and register at those posh 5th Avenue stores. Marriage Equality has come to the Empire State.

I am What I am...Disco Saturday on a NY Marriage Equality Super Pride Weekend.

The last weekend of June in the Gay, Lesbian,Bisexual and Transgender community is the traditional Gay Pride weekend. Some refer to this weekend as "Super Pride" as this is the weekend of the largest Gay Pride celebrations around the United States.

We celebrate pride weekend with an old school DISCO SATURDAY of Gay and lesbian performers, Gay icons and favorite Divas. There is only so much room. Too many songs make for a difficult page for some to load. So here I just make some random selections and wish everyone a HAPPY PRIDE.

If you are near a satellite radio, this would be a great weekend to listen to SiriusXM OutQ during your travels, especially "Feel The Spin" hosted by Larry Flick.

Here are some dance classics and anthems. Enjoy

"I Am What I am" by Gloria Gaynor No explaination needed. Just listen.

SYLVESTER: Openly gay, highly revered and still loved although lost more than two decades ago.
"You Make Me Feel Mighty Real"

"Don't Stop" by Sylvester

DAN HARTMAN "Vertigo/Relight My Fire"

CHER was already Gay Icon who today has a Transgendered Son. Chazz Bono was born Chasity and came out as a lesbian in the 1990's and and while you don't see Cher marching in parades or performing at pride festivals, her LGBT fans worship her as an icon.

"Take Me Home"

(and because so many gays love this song while this blogger does not...)

"Believe"

Its hard to choose for Disco Saturday sometimes. So how about this departure. Something new, something recent. The current LGBT anthem "BORN THIS WAY" because we are born this way. Just as Gloria Gaynor sang "I am What I am". Thanks Lady Gaga!

Back to the old school. This is definitely a traditional song for Gay Pride. As it is the time when most of us come out and let the whole world know. So here is Miss Ross....Diana Ross

"I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross

Its a very busy weekend for this blogger who will be with Sean's Last Wish at Augusta Pride in Augusta Georgia. Last year, the headline entertainment at Augusta Pride was Thelma Houston and Frenchie Davis.

Added after original post!> Late on Friday night June 24th the state of New York became the 6th state in the United States to make same-sex marriage legal. This makes this weekend's Gay Pride Celebration even more meaningful as the entire movement began in New York in 1969 as people began standing up and fighting for their rights. And people have fought long and hard for the rights they achieved today. Congratulations New York.

Let's Celebrate!

MADONNA!

"Lets Celebrate" by Skyy

And all weekend gay couples are dancing in the streets celebrating their victory in the state capital.

Martha and The Vandellas

and I say...Keep on Dancing!

Gary's Gang (had to bring some Disco back to "Disco Saturday"

Yowza yowza yowza! Dance Dance Dance down the asile Bride and bride, Groom and Groom

"Everybody Dance" By Chic

And finally, after gay and lesbian couples get married in New York and the other states that allow it....LET NO MAN PUT YOU UNDER! The final songs for "Disco Saturday" this weekend brings it back to Philly as always with First Choice featuring the lead vocals of Rochelle Fleming who by the way has performed at pride festivals. I'm sure she is celebrating the victory in New York along with us.

Ron Paul & Barney Frank's Joint Venture

An unlikely pair? Ron Paul and Barney Frank.

From GPB News-Reps. Ron Paul (R-TX) and Barney Frank (D-MA) are set to introduce a bipartisan bill today that would remove the federal prohibition on marijuana. The bill would instead let states legalize, regulate and tax marijuana.

The bill is co-sponsored by Reps. John Conyers (D-MI), Steve Cohen (D-TN), Jared Polis (D-CO), and Barbara Lee (D-CA).

If Rick James were still alive I think he'd agree.

Waiting and waiting for Marriage Equality in New York

The state assembly in New York passed a bill that could legalize marriages for same-sex couples. And for a couple weeks the people of New York have been waiting on their state senate to vote on the bill.

NEWS ARTICLE FROM New York "Gay City News"

There have been negotiations with state senators to secure votes before bringing it to the floor. News would come out that they had enough votes and would possibly vote on one day and it gets delayed day after day. Supporters of marriage equality in New York have been on pins and needles waiting for New York to join 5 other states in offering fairness and equality in Marriage.

New York State, your tax paying same-sex couples are waiting for you to make things equal. Stop the delays! Make marriage equality a reality in New York.

Click on THIS LINK for more information on contacting the NYS senate asking them to bring it to a vote. (6/23)

250th blog post: About my 1500th tweet

Two milestones are reached on the same day. For this blog which originally started at "The E Blog" then briefly last year was renamed the "Rainbow Soul Journal" and today is known as "Pride And Soul" reaches 250 blog posts with THIS edition. That number doesn't include the frequently blogging I did on MySpace during it's heyday. In fact, it was during my time blogging on MySpace that I neglected THIS blog which was established first.

The other milestone reached today is for my Twitter account. I will make posting a link to THIS blog entry the 1,500th "Tweet". If you came to this blog from that link on twitter then I thank you for being a follower of mine on Twitter. Much appreciated.

In honor of my 1,500th tweet I decided to find the 15 best tweets and place them here on the blog. There is no specific order within the fifteen best. They are random selections.

Tracy Morgan apologizes in Nashville

Actor and comedian Tracy Morgan found himself in deep trouble over hateful and disgusting comments he made in his stand-up comedy show held at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville in early June. In his show he mentioned that if he were to have a gay son he would have stabbed the child. When a gay audience member posted on his Facebook about it sparked universal outrage.

The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) got involved and there were calls for Tracy Morgan to apologize for his remarks. Tracy Morgan has spent several days meeting with members of the gay community including homeless gay youth and the parents and families of victims of anti-gay violence. The video in this blog post is of Tracy Morgan's official public apology to the Nashville community.

Sir James Paul McCartney Birthday

Happy Birthday to Paul McCartney, born June 18, 1942.

Have you ever had a school carpool where one parent driving a 1970's wood paneled station wagon (Ford Torino) only owned ONE 8-track tape and it seemed like they didn't know how to pull it out of the tape deck?

That's how often I heard this song in 1976.

Sing it with me over and over and over.."someones knockin at the door, somebodys ringing the bell"

Do me a favor, open the door...AND LET ME OUT!!

It seemed like it was a really long commute to and from school back in the day.

Thank God it's Disco Saturday- 3rd week of June 2011

Its Disco Saturday for the 3rd weekend of June 2011.

Opening the disco blog we celebrate birthdays. This week we highlight two birthdays.

It is a safe bet that most of you may not know who recorded some disco tracks before bigger fame as a TV mom.

Phylicia Ayers-Allen was born June 19, 1948. When she married Amhad Rashad in 1985 she became one of the rare popular celebrities to change her public name to her match her married name. Most when they get married keep the name they are known professionally as their stage name.

Phylicia reached her greatest fame as "Clair Huxtable" on "The Cosby Show" but she has disco roots. She recorded her own music and was married for years to Victor Willis, a member of The Village People during that groups highest success.

Here is one hard to find example of Phylicia's disco music from her 1978 album honoring Josephine Baker.

There were other recordings on YouTube from time to time but they are not available at the time of this blog post. But Happy birthday to Phylicia Ayers-Allen-Rashad on June 19th.

As for her former husband's group The Village People. You won't see much of their music on this blog simply because most of their music through YouTube isn't allowed for embedding on blogs and websites. Artists, recording and publishing companies do own the rights to the music and can dictate how they can be used. So if they don't allow it, you won't see it here. And it is very possible that anything already posted here might not be available at a later date.

Having said that, let get back to the music that we can hear for Disco Saturday

This week's second birthday honoree is Lionel Richie who's birthday is June 20, 1949

His group during the Disco Era of course would be The Commodores and there surely were many a "Brick House" on the dance floor.

Lionel Richie and The Commodores were also in a Disco era feature film, "Thank God Its Friday"

The Commodores hit single from the movie soundtrack was "Too Hot To Trot"

Also on the soundtrack and starring in the movie was Donna Summer with her song "Last Dance"

Oh but that isn't the last dance. Disco Saturday has more!

"Lets All Chant" by The Michael Zager Band

------------------------------------------------------------------
This one is a favorite you will hear occasionally in its entirety on "Feel The Spin", a great music program hosted by Larry Flick on SiriusXM satellite radio's "OutQ" channel. A Donna Summer Suite "Once Upon A Time.. Rumour Has It / I Love You / Happily Ever After".

By all means, check out Larry's show. It's definitely worth your time on Sunday afternoons. Click on Larry Flick's name to follow him on Twitter or click the link on the right side of this page for "Feel The Spin" blogs that will include a song list.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

One long set of Donna Summer requires equal time. Here is a long set of Gloria Gaynor's mid 1970's finest. "Never Can Say Goodbye" "Honey Bee" "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "If You Want It (Do It Yourself)"

-------------------------------------------------------------------

And since I am in the mood this week for the LONG sets. And I must include something out of Philadelphia. "Love Is the Message" by MFSB is clearly one of the best dance tunes of the 1970's from one of the best collection of musicians from the decade and beyond. Any long and lush recording of theirs under any identity is a treat to the ears.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

And to close out this week's Disco Saturday, we get long and funky. "Not just knee Deep" by Funkadelic and featuring the vocals of the late Phillippe' Wynne formerly of The Spinners.

Friday, June 17, 2011

Barry Manilow was born on June 17, 1943. And here is a rare treat. Barry recorded a duet with MY DIVA, the late great Phyllis Hyman for his 1987 album "Swing Street"

"Black and Blue" by Barry White featuring Phyllis Hyman.

"Copacabana" by Barry Manilow (1978)

June is Gay Pride month. Last week we honored Gay Days in Orlando. This weekend there are Gay Pride events in places like Washington DC, Philadelphia and Key West. So I thought I would post music from performers who are native to those areas.

Harry Casey is from Hallandale Florida which is in the Miami area which is not too far from Key West where they are having Key West Pride from June 8-12, 2011.

Harry Casey if you aren't aware is "KC" of KC and The Sunshine Band.

"Keep It Coming Love"

CAPITAL PRIDE in Washington DC is this weekend and their headline entertainment this year is JENNIFER HOLIDAY.

"No Frills Love" by Jennifer Holiday

Amii Stewart is from the Washington DC area. Of course she has the disco classic "Knock On Wood"

Also from Washington DC, Shannon (real name Brenda Shannon Greene)

"Let The Music Play"

And the favorite city of DISCO SATURDAY is of course the city of Brotherly Love and PHILLY PRIDE is also this weekend. And from the great disco foundation that is the sound of Philadelphia, this week's "Philly Posts" feature First Choice who's lead singer Rochelle Fleming is a friend of the gay community and sometimes appears at Gay pride events.

"Dr Love"

"Double Cross"

And that is your 10 plus one for DISCO SATURDAY this weekend. I try to post away from the mainstream hits and bring back memories of the deepest disco cuts you don't hear unless presented by a serious disco fan usually someone who might have been there when it was created. Anyway here's hoping you have a safe and happy pride weekend as we continue through the Pride month of June. Have fun in Key West, Washington DC and Philadelphia and other places that are holding LGBT pride events this weekend and this month.

See you next "Disco Saturday"

He blocks his music on YouTube, I block his birthday

There is this musician based in Minneapolis. He's been around a little over 30 years. He's kinda little physically but his career sure has been big. I mean huge! If he wants to have a concert in a big stadium he will have no problem filling every seat. Then those in attendance might get to see the musician prance around the stage wearing pants with the butt cut out so you can see his little flat beige ass while rocking his guitar.

The musician I am talking about is a legend. And he is loved by many, even by me despite my anger with him on today, his birthday.

Why am I angry. Well this musician is very tight on the use and release of his music. It is his right but it is unnecessary. He has traditionally employed difficult tactics in releasing his music so his fans can enjoy.

I remember when this musician released a 3 CD "hits" set in 1993 when the average price of a single compact disc was about $20. This musician released his "Hits" CD's as a separate purchase of either "Hits 1" or "Hits 2", but the best songs were on "Hits 3" and you could not purchase "Hits 3" by itself. You had to purchase the entire 3 CD set at a price that was more than double that of buying "Hits 1" & "Hits 2" separately and combined. So technically this would mean $40-50 dollars for the "Hits 3" CD. And back then I just couldn't afford to pay so much for what really was so little.

In the years since there were albums that were sold underground therefore required extensive work from this musician's fans to get and enjoy his music. Then he changed his name to a symbol. Another stupid gimmick and fast forward to today where we have YouTube, the main source of music posted on this blog and this musician is one of the last holdouts to allowing his music to be played on YouTube. Most of his songs are blocked, muted or quickly removed. And because of that I am unable to post anything by this musician and I am unable to post a "Soul Salute" or any type of tribute in honor of this legendary musician's birthday.

Currently there are some songs available from this musician on YouTube. Perhaps they are songs uploaded that he hasn't caught up with. But I won't waste time posting his music and risk that the links don't work in the future.

I haven't mentioned this musician's name, but I don't have to. You probably know who I am talking about now. Below are some of the classics he wrote and recorded but were also hits from other performers.

Like this song from the entertainer who shares a birthday with that musician. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TOM JONES! (Born Thomas John Woodward on June 7, 1940)

And other famous songs by that musician that were hits by other artists who aren't so restrictive of their material on YouTube.

Me'lisa Morgan "Do Me Baby"

"I Feel For You" by Chaka Khan

"Purple Rain" by Randy Crawford

Now if you want to hear the music of the musician himself. Go ahead and find it elsewhere. When this musician makes his music easier for his fans to listen to without going bankrupt then I will give him the proper respect here at Pride and Soul. But I do wish that musician a happy birthday.

What do 30 years of AIDS and Ronald Reagan have in common?

Lets take a minute and acknowledge a somber anniversary.

The title of this blog post asks "What do 30 years of AIDS and Ronald Reagan have in common?" They both have June 5Th in common.

June 5Th, 1981: The Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that five people in Los Angeles, California have a rare form of pneumonia seen only in patients with weakened immune systems, in what turns out to be the first recognized cases of AIDS.

The AIDS pandemic began 30 years ago. June 5Th being the 30Th anniversary of a disease that has killed millions of people around the world

June 5Th is also the 7Th anniversary of the death of Ronald Wilson Reagan, the man who was President of The United States when the AIDS pandemic began died on the morning of June 5,2004. Ronald Reagan was the President of the United States of America that basically ignored the pandemic until the last half of his SECOND term in office. By then it was too late for thousands who were dying at a fast pace without the support and care of their government.

Ronald Reagan died of a disease that had full attention of medical and government officials. He had access to the necessary medical care and treatment that diagnosed his condition and sustained him until he was well into his 90's and his OLD body finally gave out. But when he was in office, many people found themselves with short death sentences and no hope. Many had little time to spend with their families and to say goodbye. Ronald Reagan had his family by his side for many years so he could die with dignity.

On this 30Th anniversary of AIDS, lets remember those who were lost too soon and those who deal with the complications and great financial strain of treatment of HIV and AIDS today. And never forget to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and those around you from becoming infected.

But also remember the former President of the United States on this day. Its ironic that Ronald Reagan died on the same day that years earlier revealed a pandemic that he chose to ignore for years. Others will remember Ronald Reagan for other reasons, his acting career and his political career. And those who loved and cherished Reagan will omit one of his greatest blunders.

Ronald Reagan would have turned 100 earlier this year and people celebrated the anniversary of a man many hold responsible for thousands of deaths because the government he led wasn't there for its citizens.

As for this blogger personally, I haven't had to deal closely with HIV/AIDS. I haven't been sexually active and therefore I am negative. I have known only a few people personally who were infected or who died of AIDS but I didn't know any of them well enough to be considered a "close" friend and I am unaware of any family members who had to deal with the pandemic. I consider myself extremely lucky. But of the people I did know I witnessed the pain and grief of their friends and families. I witnessed their strength and their sorrow. And I wouldn't wish for my worst enemies to have to go through that kind of pain.

I acknowledge this somber anniversary with a little less knowledge than most because I didn't have to experience it directly. But I also acknowledge this somber anniversary with the hope and determination of always learning, always preparing, and always PROTECTING.

Stay safe! And read any of the articles linked below that will provide a much better insight on this 30Th anniversary of AIDS

Disco Saturday and Gay Days 20th anniversary

"Disco Saturday" for the first weekend in June 2011. This is the popular "Gay Days" weekend in Orlando Florida. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first "Gay Day" at Walt Disney World. Originally an unofficial gathering of Gays and Lesbians at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom, the event has grown into a week of gay pride events all over Central Florida. And surely some of its participants are fans of the old school Disco you will get here for "Disco Saturday"

Since this weeks "Disco Saturday" is in honor of Gay Days weekend in Orlando, I thought I would share with you the five part video of friends who attended Gay Days in 2010. You can enjoy this and other videos from the highly recommended YouTube channel "Life In The Form of Sean" And if you like the videos, then you should "Like" Sean on Facebook

And I have the next dance for you with birthday greetings..

Gil Scott-Heron (1949-2011)

Gil Scott-Heron died on Friday May 27th at the age of 62. (News Article from Georgia Public Broadcasting)

I grew up around a soul music radio station at a time when you pretty much played whatever you want. Unlike todays limited playlist programmed crap that poses for radio in most of the US. And the people I knew who were Disc Jockeys at that station became legends for the region, they were just like the Frankie Crockers of NY and Herb Kents of Chicago.

I say that because at that time growing up I was exposed to recordings from people like Gil Scott-Heron, The Last Poets and the deepest album cuts from a Curtis Mayfield, James Brown or family friend Isaac Hayes. The kind of stuff that wasn't "mainstream" and many would call radical today. But oh was there some talent and a sense of pride in those records. They didn't promote violence or drug use but they admitted that those were REAL problems in the neighborhood. And the real true talent of REAL musicians.

Even though Scott-Heron had problems in his personal life, he was true to his form of art. And yes he does leave a legacy. A STRONG LEGACY.

Rest IN Peace Gil Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949-May 27, 2011)

"The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"

May 24: Birthday celebration and heartbreaking loss

In the world of music, May 24 holds a lot of birthday legends but in 2001 music history in Georgia took a huge hit.

The Georgia Music Hall Of Fame museum in Macon Georgia announced that it will close permanently on June 12th. The news of this loss is heartbreaking to some in the local community (including me) and a major blow in the preservation of music history in the state of Georgia and beyond. I will have more to say about this loss in future blogs.

Here is video from when the facility opened in 1996

On a brighter note, there were many birthdays in the world of music for May 24th.

Robert Zimmerman, known and loved as "Bob Dylan" was born 70 years ago on May 24th.

"Like A Rolling Stone"

Regardless of your favorite genre in music, Bob Dylan deserves much respect for his music touched many genre's and artists.

Like this original Bob Dylan song "Forever Young"

"Forever Young" is one of the many Bob Dylan songs that were covered by other artists, including PATTI LABELLE, who also shares a birthday with Bob Dylan, born just 3 years later on May 24th in 1944.

More on Patti Labelle's birthday later.

Another of my favorite Bob Dylan classics is "Knocking On Heaven's Door" from 1973

This was also covered by many including Macon Georgia native RANDY CRAWFORD
(Dedicated to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame 1996-2011)

So as mentioned above, May 24th is also the birthday of Patricia Louise Holte, known and love again as PATTI LABELLE, and she turned 67 and is still going strong.

The Pride and Soul Blog will do a "Soul Salute" for Miss Patti at a later date. So much going on this week. But Miss Patti isn't going anyway. Thankfully we will have her around to love for many years to come. Happy Birthday Patti Labelle!

Here is one of her classic slow jams from the 1980's "Love Need And Want You"

One day another Soul Salute will have to include the great group CAMEO and its leader LARRY BLACKMON, who was born 55 years ago on May 24th.

And finally, we celebrate the birthday of Roseanne Cash, daughter of Johnny and born May 24, 1955.

Just listening to music can make a day go smoothly or can heal wounds. Today the region where I live was wounded by the loss of our state's Music Hall of Fame. If you have such an entity in your area YOU MUST SUPPORT IT in every way possible. Don't just talk about it but DO IT. If you love music then respect it by supporting and preserving it. Please don't let happen to you what has happened to Georgia's music history today.
