Disco Saturday: The hot 80's in July

It's been a hot July. Well it's always a HOT July. Temperatures in the 100's for much of the country but even temps in the 80's and 90's for some in the inner city can be hard to bear. So hoping you are staying cool out there. As you sit with a cool drink and a fan blowing a breeze on you this week's "Disco Saturday" will be in the 80's and 90's. Starting with a one hit wonder who's lead singer had slightly greater success on her own.

"Keep In Touch (Body to Body)" by Shades of Love (1982)

The lead singer of Shades of Love was Me'lisa Morgan

"Fools Paradise" by Me'lisa Morgan (1986)

Me'lisa's first solo hit was a remake of Prince's "Do Me Baby" but in the early 90's she had an upbeat cover of Al Green's "I'm Still In Love with You"

When I heard the Shades of Love song today I was driving through the tiny town of Sharon Georgia. So for that I offer a few Sharons for you to dance to.

"I Specialize In Love" by SHARON Brown

"Can You Handle It" by the late SHARON Redd (1982)

A now couple songs from the late great Gwen Guthrie that remind me of my time living in New York City in the early and mid 1980's. And I remember those HOT summers in the city. Air Conditioning was GOLDEN especially when you were too poor to have it in your own room at home and the best you could do was put a fan in the window and sit by that window at night switching back and forth between WBLS & 98.7 Kiss on the radio. There was musical pleasure with the pain of heat in the summer.

"It Should Have Been You" by Gwen Guthrie

"Seventh Heaven" by Gwen Guthrie

"Peanut Butter" by Gwen Guthrie

And a few more selections you might have grooved to back in the 80's.

"Party Lites" by Slave (1981)

"Over Like A Fat Rat" by Fonda Rae (1981)

"One More Shot" by C-Bank

And we close out this 80's edition of "Disco Saturday" with Joyce Sims

"All and All"

Stay cool this hot summer of 2011. Next week "Disco Saturday" may recognize a milestone birthday in a disco way. Come back to the blog to find out what that means.

My NON Sugarcoated opinion of the death of Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse found dead at age 27. Many are posting that it is SAD but is it really sad? I hate to rain on the grieving parade but this isn't sad as much as it is shameful REALITY. It is a painful truth and the only real sadness would be IF this isn't the wake up call that it needs to be just as it wasn't for the other drug abusers in entertainment who are now DEAD. It was predictable and should not be sugarcoated. Do drugs, refuse treatment, you are likely to DIE.

Fans knew about Amy Winehouse's troubles and continued to reward her by supporting her music. The people in Amy Winehouse's life from family to business associates to so-called friends certainly knew. Some likely tried to help all they could but many likely were just along for the ride ($$$). There are many people who could have worked harder to prevent senseless deaths like this from happening.

Perhaps the next time a celebrity or your own friends and family are abusing drugs they are given a choice...shape up, clean up or DONT SUPPORT THEM. Stop buying their music and concert tickets until they clean themselves up. Stop rewarding drug addicts. You supported her talent then you aided and abeted her demise. We tend to watch train wrecks like Amy, Lindsey and Whitney like its a sitcom and people laugh and joke about it and can't wait for their next public release. The money these entertainers earn from your support also supported everything that led to DEATH. And today's example was Amy Winehouse.

The money hungry music company executives should create and enforce higher standards to help prevent things like this from happening and of course save lives. Most people have to submit to a drug test for employment. Perhaps this should also be a condition before a recording contract is offered or a concert promotion. Other people's lives and fortunes were on the line. If one were to invest time and money to promote a talent then that talent should be prepared and protected. And a drug abuser is more of a liability than an asset. Their troubles overshadow their talent and everyone loses in the end. All that's left now are for the vultures to pick at the remains. Yes, that is a waste.

Amy Winehouse is the latest in a long line of talented 27 year olds who abused drugs and died over generations. Time to make an example and turn them into a lesson so this trend can come to an end.

She should have said YES YES YES to "Rehab"

Pride and Soul Salute: Larry Levan

On July 20, 1954 a man named Lawrence Philpot was born. He only lived 38 years but in that time left a lasting legacy in music. Dance, Disco and house music. "Larry Levan" was an innovative DJ during the 1970's and 1980's. The music he played in clubs, produced or remixed became the cream of the crop, totally smashing any idea that Disco sucked. Larry Levan proved its greatness.

Larry Levan July 20, 1954 – November 8, 1992

In honor of Larry Levan's birthday the Pride and Soul blog presents on one page an hour of music as presented by Larry Levan. Mostly from his legendary tenure at the famed PARADISE GARAGE disco in New York City.

Disco Saturday: The Disco Nightlife in C Minor

Greetings everyone!

This weeks "Disco Saturday" honors the nightlife which basically Disco was the soundtrack of the nightlife in the 1970s. Or its my excuse to honor singer Alicia Bridges, who's birthday is July 15, 1953. And her disco classic is of course the song "I Love the Nightlife"

And you know this song was a prime part of anyone's "Disco Night"

GQ

The Isley Brothers had their own Disco Night too.

Disco parties went on from "Saturday Night" into Sunday Morning"

THELMA HOUSTON

And there was of course some "Night Fever" but there is no embeddable video from YouTube that I can post of the Bee Gees song. So I guess I won't post it here.

The Trammps held back the night

There were those times when Disco took you into the "Twilight Zone"

MANHATTAN TRANSFER

Or To a Galaxy far away

WAR

And in the galaxy you could see stars in someones eyes as the Disco music slows down the pace.

HERBIE HANCOCK

Many found love in the disco nightlife.

"Love in C Minor" by Cerrone

There was a lot of free love in the Disco nightlife

DOUBLE EXPOSURE

JEAN CARN

And when some woke up in the morning and it was time to go home, they asked the question "Was That All it Was"?

And they did it all again the next weekend. As I will have another installment of "Disco Saturday" next weekend.

Have a great week!

The New York Blackout 1977

Where were you when the lights went out in New York City on July 13, 1977?

They called it a BLACKOUT

I was a child growing up in South Florida with relatives living in New York. I remember watching favorite TV shows like "Welcome Back Kotter" and "Baretta" when suddenly there was a "special report" from the network news telling viewers nationwide that the electricity had gone out in the New York area.

During the overnight hours of July 13Th, 1977 and into the next day as people were stuck in elevators and on subways, looting ensued in many areas and there were hundreds of fires. It was chaos for some and in my own family there was a birth. One of my relatives gave birth to a baby girl on what was supposed to be a night of celebration of her mother's birthday. Now grandmother and granddaughter share the same birthday. Today that entire segment of the family lives in Virginia and in the 1990's another child was born on this day.

It's easy for me to remember the day for its infamy and the birthdays in my family. And there is a favorite disco song about that day by one of the legendary Disco groups, The Trammps.

"The Night The Lights Went Out" was released within a couple months of the 1977 Blackout and proved to be a regional hit especially in the disco clubs. But also to the real fans of The Trammps over the years who listen beyond their big hit "Disco Inferno".

The Trammps "Disco Inferno" would become a huge hit into the next year from the massive success of "Saturday Night Fever" which hit movie screens later in 1977.

Local news report as the lights returned to New York City.

Disco Saturday: The S.O.L.A.R. Galaxy

On July 8Th, 2011 we had the final launch of United States Space Shuttle Atlantis into space. When this mission is completed the 30 year old US Space Shuttle program will close. The space shuttles took the US into galaxies far and away over 30 years. We lost crew members with "Challenger" and "Columbia" but not in vain. And hopefully the United States will once again be pioneers and leaders in space exploration.

"Galaxy" by War (1977)

"Star Wars" by Meko (1977)

"Disco theme to Close Encounters of The Third Kind" by John Williams

So with the final launch of the space shuttle, this weeks "Disco Saturday" takes us to the galaxy of SOLAR records.

S.O.L.A.R. Records (acronym for Sound of Los Angeles Records) was reconstituted out of Soul Train Records only two years after it was founded with Soul Train television show host and creator Don Cornelius. Dick Griffey reorganized the company into the SOLAR label in late 1977 and it quickly became one of the most important disco, R&B, and dance music imprints of the late 1970s and 1980s.

Here are some selections from performers who were signed to SOLAR records and its subsidiaries.

"Soul Train 75" by The Soul Train Gang, produced by Dick Griffey and Don Cornelius as the theme to Soul Train from 1975 to 1976 ushering in the Disco era which was supported on Soul Train

"Career Girl" by Carrie Lucas (1980)

"Make it With You" By The Whispers (1977)

"I Can Make It Better For You" by The Whispers (1980)

"Make That Move" by Shalamar 1980

"I Owe You One" by Shalamar 1979

"Fantastic Voyage" by Lakeside

"Here I Am" by Dynasty

"Meeting In The Ladies Room" by Klymaxx

"Freakazoid" by Midnight Star

Black Bigots

After a recent personal confrontation I have decided to begin a regular blog series highlighting something that is way too often swept under the rug. I will call that series "Black Bigots" and it will feature people who are Black/African-American and who display the many aspects of being a bigot. Racism, homophobia, sexism and any other form of discrimination practices by persons of color toward other races and in many cases "Black On Black" discrimination. If it smells of bigotry I plan to air it out.

"Black Bigots" is being presented by me as a Black man who happens to also be gay. And I have experienced some bigotry within the same Black community where black men like to refer to other black men as "Brothers", or more commonly misspelled as "Brotha". But if you are revealed to be gay in the community those "brothers" will turn on you in a hot minute. Such is the case of a recent confrontation I had which I will dedicate its own blog post.

I have always wanted to blog with total honesty and integrity and I don't care about stepping on anyones toes as long as I am sure that the truth is being exposed. I am not also a very good writer, this is my practice and I will improve over time. But I will not hold back on the exposure of BLACK BIGOTS! Black people often talk about racism and bigotry from other ethnicitys but seem to think that it is OK for them to express the same type of hatred without being accountable. Like whenever someone uses the "N" word. If the person who says it happens to be white, they may have hell to pay. But if you are Black, its supposed to be ok. I won't give them a pass.

I am also inspired by famous Black people when they sometimes speak out on issues that they may feel make the Black community look bad. Bill Cosby has expressed his opinions many times and he caught a lot of flack for it. Some say we as black people shouldn't air out our dirty laundry. I say bullshit! It's long overdue for the truth to be exposed and dealt with. It is time to air out ALL of the dirty laundry including those HOLY DRAWZ with skid marks down the back. And if BLACK BIGOTS don't want their dirty laundry aired out in public then they need to use extra detergent to clean the laundry, or to put in simple terms....wash your ass and keep it clean.

But for those who are funky, you will be put out in the open for the light of day to expose your darkest "secrets". I will name names with no shame. And I dare you to prove me wrong. But I will also encourage you to help make things right.

Move Me No Mountain

A classic song that was never a huge hit but was recorded by legends.

Check out different versions of "Move Me No Mountain" written by Jerry Ragovoy

He produced one of the early recordings of the song by Dionne Warwick. She and Barry White's female backup group Love Unlimited each recorded and released the song in 1974-1975.

"So In Love" with Jill Scott's new song

The rare NEW song that I am enjoying

"So In Love With You" by Jill Scott featuring Anthony Hamilton and comes from Jill Scott's latest CD album release "The Light of The Sun"

Writen by Scott & Hamilton along with Terry Lewis and JR Hutson, the son of soul singer Leroy Hutson. Hutson and Scott are the primary producers of the album as well.

I first heard this song on the "Heart and Soul" channel on SiriusXM satellite radio. I have become so disgusted with new music and broadcast radio where I live that I likely would have missed this song. I realize that I discovered it late after this single was released. But better late than never. And just in time for the entire CD was released on June 21. And Jill Scott is one of the VERY few recording artists who is worthy of purchasing an actual hard copy compact disc so it can be held in your hand, its liner notes read and later placed in a respectful location on the shelf.

I'm not crazy about labels like "neo soul" but honestly, it is because of "neo soul" that soul music still exists. And I dare to say that Jill Scott is the Queen of "neo soul" who in my opinion hasn't missed a single beat with any of her CD releases. This latest song is a crown jewel.

Disco Saturday: Liberty and the freedom to dance

This week's Disco Saturday celebrates Liberty and the Freedom to dance your ass off.

Happy 4th of July weekend to everyone in the United States.

Happy Birthday in heaven to the great Phyllis Hyman (7/6/1949-6/30/1995)

"Heavenly"

Also happy birthday in heaven to Gene McFadden (July 2, 1948 – January 27, 2006), half of the team McFadden & Whitehead as legendary songwriters with Victor Carstarphen at Philadelphia International. One of their disco gems here is "Tell The World How I Feel About Cha' Baby" by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes

"Sing A Happy Song" by The O'Jays

"Over and Over" Sylvester

"There But For The Grace of God" by Machine

"Any Love" Rufus Featuring Chaka Khan

"Shine On Silver Moon" by Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr
Billy Davis celebrated a birthday recently and it was also his wedding anniversary to Marilyn McCoo. Both the same day, June 26th.
This was their entry in the Disco genre.

"Don't You Want My Love" by Debbie Jacobs

"This Time Baby" by Jackie Moore

And in closing, Disco Saturday would be remiss to not offer a congratulations to the Disco fans of New York State who happen to be Gay or Lesbian as the state of New York legalized their right to marry. There have been celebrations for the past week from Gay Pride and many weddings are being planned as New Yorkers enter the Fourth of July holiday weekend and the official start of marriage equality in the coming weeks.

Here are two disco-ish songs in your honor.
